The Kyiv Triptych fine art gallery: the Global Arts Workshop has presented “Astronavigator”, a solo exhibition by the Ukrainian master Vasyl Mizler. Impressive in scale and compositional complexity, the author’s art works combine archaic and futuristic geometry, as well as stasis and dynamism. The ornaments could easily be imagined on both archeological findings and on spacecrafts that could belong to civilizations we have yet to encounter.
Since the dawn of time the man has been scrutinizing the skies in search of his place in the Universe. Soon observing celestial bodies has gained a more practical function: seafarers and travelers navigated by the stars, societies used it to tell the time and manage households.
“Vasyl Mizler’s cosmic folk style is charged with the energies of heaven and earth. It has the meticulous, painstaking, harmonious quality of a refined piece of jewelry, which is hardly surprising, as the artist has devoted several decades to glassmaking, an art form that has no error margin”, says Myroslava Hartmond, the gallery director and exhibition curator.
That is what the artist Vasyl Mizler said on his creative philosophy: “Everything is simple. Everything is very complex. One wants to discover and understand the nature of things and phenomena from the original source. I enjoy creating symbols and symbolic compositions – the nodes of elemental energy. However, in order to make your imagination gain a material form one should thoroughly work through every nuance of shape and colour. In order to be successful, a work of art should produce an impression of intelligence and spontaneity. The most important thing is to keep raising the benchmark for both spiritual development and technique”.
Vasyl Mizler was born in 1952 in Stetseva village of Ivano-Frankivsk region. In 1972-1976 he studied at the Kosiv Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts specializing in metalwork.
Between 1976 and 1982 he worked as an artist in various workshops in the Ivano-Frankivsk region. In 1982-1987 he studied at the Lviv State Institute of Decorative-Applied Arts, specializing in glassmaking. Upon graduation, V. Mizler was engaged by the Kyiv Factory of Decorative Glass where he worked until 2000 receiving the highest qualification grade and exhibiting his glasswork and crystal frequently. From 2000 to 2017 he was a senior lecturer at the Kyiv State M. Boichuk Institute of Decorative Art and Design.
His works have been purchased by the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, the Art Fund of Ukraine, the Pereyaslav-Khmelnytskyi Local History Museum, as well as private collectors. His oeuvres are a part of the permanent collection of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine. Vasil Mizler has been exhibiting his decorative painting since 2005.
